Title: CIUDAD NEOLIBER_AL. Urban policies in Latin America and Spain
Funding entity: Santander Bank and Universidad Autónoma de Madrid
Funding period: June 2011 – May 2012

The collaborative research project CIUDAD NEOLIBER_AL established a comparative analytical framework for the study of neoliberal urban policies implemented in Madrid, Buenos Aires, Santiago de Chile and Mexico City. In collaboration between four interdisciplinary teams located in these cities, the central aim of the project was to learn about the heterogeneities and simultaneities occurring during the implementation of urban neoliberalism in Spain and Latin America. A special effort was undertaken to gain insights to recently occurring processes of gentrification and re-appropriation of central urban areas by wealthy tenants as well as the counter-hegemonic protest against the implementation of such mainstream politics.
